Graphene conducts electricity ten times better than expected Physicists have produced nanoribbons of graphene -- the single-atom-thick carbon -- that conduct electrons better than theory predicted even for the most idealized form of the material. The finding could help graphene realize its promise in high-end electronics, where researchers have long hoped it could outperform traditional materials such as silicon. In graphene, electrons can move faster than in any other material at room temperature. But techniques that cut sheets of graphene into the narrow ribbons needed to form wires of a nano-scale circuit leave ragged edges, which disrupt the electron flow.Nature

Editorial: Why games should enter the public domain A few days ago I inadvertently caused a bit of a fuss. In writing about GOG’s Time Machine sale, I expressed my two minds about the joy of older games being rescued from obscurity, and my desire that they be in the public domain. Florida targets high-dollar Bitcoin exchangers State authorities in Florida on Thursday announced criminal charges targeting three men who allegedly ran illegal businesses moving large amounts of cash in and out of the Bitcoin virtual currency. Rate-limiting State By design, the Internet core is stupid, and the edge is smart. This design decision has enabled the Internet's wildcat growth, since without complexity the core can grow at the speed of demand. You can explain eBay's $50 billion turnaround with just this one crazy story Back in the middle of the last decade, eBay, the massive auction site, was in trouble. Between 2005 and 2007, its stock price was cut in half and its market cap shrank by $30 billion. In October 2007, eBay admitted that Skype, a company it had acquired for $2.5 billion two years earlier, was actually worth less than half of that. Broken Age and the Kickstarter factor I haven't done a ton of gaming on my PC lately. “This message will self-destruct in five, four, three…” You’ve no doubt seen a scenario like this in spy movies or even cartoon shows but thanks to a recent contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), it could soon become a reality.
Last year, the agency announced intentions to build similar technology and put a call out for partners. The plan was to develop a device that when triggered, could degrade partially or completely into its surroundings.
IBM answered the call and was awarded a $3.45 million contract last month to move forward with the project. Known as Vanishing Programmable Resources (VAPR), the program will develop an entirely new class of electronics.
Alicia Jackson, DARPA program manager, noted at the time that commercial off-the-shelf, or COTS, electronics made for everyday purchases are durable and last nearly forever. What they are looking for, however, is a way to make electronics that last precisely as long as they are needed.
IBM will be experimenting with glass shattering techniques that could ultimately turn a functioning silicon chip into an unusable powder. DARPA said a trigger, like a fuse or a reactive metal layer, could be used to initiate the shattering process.
As you’ve probably already guessed, the technology would be used inside of spy gear or other devices on the battlefield like radios, remote sensors and phones. DARPA isn’t fond of gadgets like these being scattered across the battlefield where they could ultimately end up being captured by the enemy and repurposed or studied to gain a technological advantage.

Secret court ruling puts Obama's NSA crack-down in motion

Three weeks ago President Obamaannounced his highly anticipated plans on NSA reform, which were designed to clamp down on mass data collection operations. Newreports say at least two of the initiatives the President put forth are now being put into action.
A secret ruling made by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court has now approved the two measures, both of which are directly tied to how the NSA can access the massive database of metadata it has accumulated. The first should potentially see the NSA require court approval on the basis of reasonable suspicion that the investigation is in some way connected to a known terrorist organization before accessing the data. The other is based on the degrees of separation or "hops" in which an NSA investigation can run. Previously, the agency was legally allowed to gather information on individuals within 3 degrees of separation of a target, that number now drops to 2.
Of the suggestions and proposals from Obama's speech, these appear to be the most obvious, much of the other changes are more long term and will require approval periods and Congressional involvement. When the President announced the latest NSA reforms last month, he also proposed that a third party take control of the massive collection of metadata, but until that happens the government will retain the database.
Much of the details of the latest FISA court ruling are secret, but it did order the government to determine whether or not the motion can be released to the public (along with previous rulings) by February 17.
